About the conference

CLAANZ reinstated its annual conference on 5 August 2021. The conference was hosted online for Australian audiences, and both online and in-person for audiences in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch in New Zealand. The theme of the conference was Government and the Sector, which covered matters such as regulation, administrative law, tax, the government and charity boundary, outsourcing and political advocacy. The programme offered a wide-ranging, covering: conceptual and normative boundaries between government and charity; innovation and risk in a regulatory environment; charity advocacy; charitable trusts and Indigenous economic development; recent developments in charity taxation; the burdens of compliance; and universities as charities. In addition, the book launch of Associate Professor Ian Murray’s new book, Charity Law and Accumulation was held during the conference. Speakers included Jennifer Batrouney AM QC from the Victorian Bar, Dr Catherine Brown from the Lord Mayor’s Charitable Foundation, Professor David Gilchrist from UWA, Simon Miller from Save the Children, Emeritus Professor Myles McGregor-Lowndes OAM from QUT, Kate Davenport QC from the New Zealand bar and Assistant Commissioner Anna Longley from the ACNC.

CLAANZ offered both in-person (in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch in New Zealand) and online only registrations for this year’s conference. The physical venues were generously made available by Chapman Tripp (in Auckland and Wellington) and Parry Field (in Christchurch).  We are grateful for the generous support of Chapman Tripp and Parry Field for providing venues, technical support and catering for this event. CLAANZ acknowledges the generous and collegial contribution of Corrs Chambers Westgarth in offering their office space and technical and catering support to facilitate in person attendance for Australian attendees, however due to COVID restrictions this could not occur. CLAANZ remains deeply grateful for that support even though we are sadly no longer in a position to take it up. We look forward to our continued relationship with Corrs in the months ahead.
